Even if you have done all the research and think you found a great franchise opportunity, there are many factors that can ultimately affect the success of your investment. One of these key factors is the relationship you as a franchisee will have with your prospective franchisor. So much depends on the communication of information and ideas between the franchisor and its franchisees, that it is worth examining what makes a good franchisee/franchisor relationship in the first place. Here are a few points to consider:

  • Make sure that the company’s values and goals are in line with your values and personality. If you believe in the same principals then you will be more motivated to make your franchise business succeed.

  • Look for franchise opportunities that offer strong franchisee support. While this “support” can take on many forms- from educational workshops to access to analytical tools to the existence and support of numerous channels of communication and transparency- it all boils down to a commitment to help their franchisees succeed.

  • Look for ways to “give back” to your franchisor. If your franchisor is open to it, you can offer your knowledge and advice for how the franchise can be improved. You can also look for other ways to be involved, such as serving on a committee. Either way, you will create good will and also have a greater feeling of ownership towards the franchise.
